The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is an annual commemoration of the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building that claimed the lives of 168 individuals. Conceived in April of 2000 by two friends to celebrate life and to understand its value in the light of the tragedy that instantly snuffed out lives without warning, the inaugural event was held that year. Since then more than 10,000 runners participate every year, making "Runner's World Magazine" classify this event as one of the world's "12 Must Run Marathons."
