During the late 1960's and early 1970's a the Ugandan teenager Judith Ayaa established herself as an African and international sprinting phenomenon; more so in the 400-meter run. Her Commonwealth Games bronze medal win for Uganda in 1970 in Edinburgh remains unique. Ayaa's achievements were additionally significant given that they occurred when the significance of presence of African women on the international sports scene was in its infancy.
